Monopoly
June 08, 2011
For Monopoly I borrow icons from the popular board game Monopoly and
relate it to the experience of living in Irvine. It’s common knowledge
that the Irvine Company owns almost everything surrounding UCI – the
apartment complexes, the land itself, the signs that direct us. But if you
don’t pay attention, you might miss out on something; when you realize
that the tables at the University Town Center have the Irvine Company logo
on them, you begin to question how far their grasp truly reaches and where
their interests really lie in their relationship with the school.

Pablo Picasso

Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don’t start measuring her limbs.

Sample
June 02, 2011
I once went to an art opening with a cousin of mine who is also an artist.
We ran into a friend of his, also an artist. He introduced me as his
cousin and said that I was a student at UC Irvine, and was therefore a
“conceptual artist”. I’m not entirely sure how facetious he was being.
Sample is a look into the minds of the studio art majors at UCI, their
conceptions of art, and their time here. I am curious in seeing to what
extent the institution we come out of defines us as artists. The
reflections of the students also provide insight into the inner workings
of the program, its pros and cons, and what we have learned here.
